DESCRIPTION

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) virus is an alphavirus transmitted by mosquitos. While it’s not present ubiquitously in the US, there are a growing number of new cases annually. Early laboratory detection is crucial in lowering fatality rates. This webinar will give an overview of EEE virus in the US, examine the role of public health laboratories in environmental testing for EEE and highlight successful approaches to arboviral surveillance. Experts will review available clinical tests, strategies to implement surveillance and challenges frequently encountered. Experts will also explore the impact of COVID-19 on environmental testing. The goal of this webinar is to highlight the importance of EEE testing and examine current strategies for successful surveillance.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the program, the participant will be able to:

Describe EEE, its causative agents and how it impacts public health
Identify appropriate environmental arbovirus surveillance testing methods to implement
Evaluate the advantages and challenges of investing in EEE surveillance testing
Assess strategies for EEE surveillance

This program is intended for clinical and public health laboratory staff, microbiology students, microbiology laboratory workers, epidemiologists, and research scientists.
