DESCRIPTION

In the past 20 years tick-borne disease cases have increased inexorably. In the US, at least 19 infectious diseases are transmitted by ticks, representing more than 75% of all reported cases of arthropod-borne diseases. Accurate tick identification and tick-borne pathogen surveillance are required to determine geographical distributions of vectors, disease transmission risk and to develop and monitor vector control activities. The webinar will provide an overview of tick surveillance and identification, detail current identification methods used in the US and introduce a novel method that is being evaluated as a tool for tick identification optimization. In the future this new tool could help provide accurate and up-to-date data for public health and scientific communities and facilitate vector and vector-borne pathogen surveillance programs.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of the program, the participant will be able to:

Describe how MALDI-TOF provides a unique method of tick identification
Analyze available tick identification methods and summarize the importance of tick surveillance
Identify current and future public health applications of tick identification using MALDI-TOF

This program is intended for clinical and public health laboratory staff, microbiology students, microbiology laboratory workers, epidemiologists,and research scientists.
